ACTIVITIES

Monthly Meetings

From May 2008 the Monthly Meeting will be held at the Dukes, Lancaster on the fourth Tuesday of every month. The meetings start at 10.00 a.m. with an informal half-hour for coffee/tea and biscuits followed at 10.30 a.m. by  the main  meeting.  All  are welcome. Our U3A provides its own leaders and group coordinators for its activities but on the occasion of monthly meetings a speaker is invited to talk to the whole group. Speakers at Monthly Meetings can be invited from within the membership but are mostly brought along from outside. Our Speaker Finder is very pleased to hear from members who are willing to speak or are able to recommend speakers from outside who would be prepared to do so for a modest fee.

In February, we hold our Annual General Meeting at which reports are given, the committee is elected and members are encouraged to influence the way  we do things.

Groups

These are the backbone of our activity with at least one group meeting in both the morning and afternoon of most week days. We also have an increasing number of weekend and evening activities. The various indoor interest groups mostly meet at the Lancaster Friends' Meeting House (LFMH) or members' own homes. Although we are, of course, not connected with the Quakers (or any other religion) we find LFMH a very convenient central point for meetings. To cover the cost of hiring rooms at LFMH and the expenses of running group meetings at home, we typically ask members to pay 50p at each meeting attended. This charge includes refreshments.  Purely outside meetings, such as walks, are free.

Attendance at monthly meetings is £1.

Trips

We organise many trips to places of interest either by coach or car. Some of these are under the auspices of a particular group, others are of general interest. All trips are open to all L & M U3A members although, occasionally, regular group members have to have priority if we are using a coach and this is full. Recent trips include Formby and the red squirrel reserve,  theatres in Manchester,  Port Sunlight and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool,  Manchester Art Gallery, Carlisle and its Museums, the Opera in Manchester, Hadrian's Wall, Muncaster Castle and Owl Sanctuary, Hilbre Island and its Seals, and the Harrogate Flower Show.

Information

A monthly circulation is made to all members which outlines both the timetable and venues of meetings, together with other current information.  This is normally picked up at the Monthly Meeting but for those not attending a particular monthly meeting the circulation is by post or personal delivery.
