Monthly Meetings
The Monthly Meeting is held at the Dukes Playhouse, Lancaster, usually on the fourth Tuesday of every month. The meetings start at 10.00 a.m. with an informal half-hour for coffee/tea and biscuits followed at 10.30 a.m. by the main meeting. All members are welcome. Our U3A provides its own leaders and group coordinators for its activities but on the occasion of the monthly meeting a speaker is invited to talk to the whole group.
Speakers at Monthly Meetings can be invited from within the membership but are mostly brought along from outside. Our Speaker Finder is very pleased to hear from members who are willing to speak or are able to recommend speakers from outside who would be prepared to do so for a modest fee.
In November, we hold our Annual General Meeting at which reports are given, the Committee is elected and members are encouraged to influence the way we do things.
There is a £1 charge at Monthly Meetings to cover room hire and refreshments.
Groups
These are the backbone of our activity with at least one group meeting in both the morning and afternoon of most week days. We also have a number of weekend and evening activities. The various indoor interest groups mostly meet at the Lancaster Friends' Meeting House (LFMH) or members' own homes.
Although we are, of course, not connected with the Quakers (or any other religion) we find LFMH a very convenient central point for meetings.
To cover the cost of hiring rooms at LFMH and the expenses of running group meetings at home, we typically ask members to pay £1 per meeting at LFMH, 50p at home meetings. This charge includes refreshments. Purely external meetings, such as walks, are free although a reasonable contribution for petrol is expected from those having a lift.
Trips
We organise many trips to places of interest, either by coach or car. Some of these are under the auspices of a particular group, others are of general interest. All trips are open to all Lancaster and Morecambe U3A members although, occasionally, regular group members have to be given priority - especially if a coach is used and this is full.
Recent trips include the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, the Chris Barber Big Band at Keswick Theatre by the Lake, an Historic Devon Tour, The Globe Theatre in London and many more.
Information
The monthly diary is circulated to all members. This outlines both the timetable and location of meetings, together with other relvant details. Members also receive a monthly newletter which provides a wide variety of U3A information.
There are various methods of distributing the monthly diary and newsletter.
- Email: As documents by email to the member's preferred email address. These can be read on your computer or printed out as required. This is the preferred method as it involves no printing or postage costs.
- Download: As a download from this website. The documents are in the same format as above. The documents are encrypted as they contain some personal information. The password is automatically sent to members.
- Paper Copy: This can be picked up at the Monthly Meeting. For those not attending a particular monthly meeting the circulation is by post or personal delivery.
- Quick Diary: A short version of the diary is also available on the Quick Diary page of this site. Names and contact details have been removed.
