Sunderland Point Evening Walk

Seven walkers turned up at Middleton Sands at 7 o'clock on Thursday 24th July for the annual Sunderland Point walk led by Iris Birks.  It was a beautiful dry and sunny evening.  We set of along the shoreline.  Unfortunately the tide was way out but we could see where the tide had reached.  The usual collection of driftwood and other objects were lying around.  We were told later that piles of driftwood above the tide line had been collected and claimed as owned to be removed later.  Driftwood below the tide line could be claimed by anyone.

We passed the usual grazing cattle on our way and arrived to look at Sambo's Grave with its usual neat collection of tributes and artefacts. After rounding  the Point we passed the larger houses and soon arrived at the Third Terrace.  At the Second Terrace Iris showed us the house and room she was born in.  The Cotton Tree did not seem to have grown very much.  On the way past the First Terrace a lady (Cynthia) who knew Iris came out from her cottage and very kindly invited us in for a drink. The low ceilings and panelling spoke of times long ago. After enjoying our drink and biscuit, Cynthia's husband Alan took us out to the back and showed us the extensive gardens.

We said our goodbyes and made our way back down  The Lane and along the shore back to the cars.  We were treated to a beautiful sunset and had all enjoyed a very interesting walk.
