Haweswater Fell Walk 23rd June 2008

A select group of four set off on a perfect summer walking day to explore the fells on the SE corner of Haweswater. First we climbed steeply up the Old Corpse Road, with excellent views backwards across to the High Street range. Turning south we walked along the ridge with fine extensive views of Swindale with the Eden Valley and Cross Fell behind. We opted for the longest of various options for the day and after crossing Selside and several small ups and downs and eating our picnics we arrived at Artle Crag. Very soon we reached an interesting view of Scafell, Mickledore and Scafell Pike far away in the west and our highest top Artlecrag Pike  (713m). Making our way down across the grass to Gatescarth Pass the extensive southern view over Longsleddale to Morecambe Bay and the Lancashire hills made a good contrast to the crags of Harter Fell immediately in front. Down the gill to Mardale Head showed Haweswater looking quite alpine and we finally said goodbye to another group of 4 who we had seen several times already as they took the same route as us at a similar average pace. Finally we made our way along the concessionary path below the road back to the car, passing and chatting to two people one of  whom  knew one of our group and who had done  virtually the same route but in reverse!  The weather was perfect all day with increasing sun as time went by. A very enjoyable day on the fells.        John Ellison
