Friday Walk - Ulverston to Dalton

On Friday 3rd October, our party of walkers set off from Lancaster on a gloriously sunny morning for an enjoyable train ride across the estuaries to Ulverston. The initial part of our walk took us along the old route to Swarthmoor Hall with its George Fox connections. We had a walk in the garden and admired the outside of the old building. We then enjoyed a morning break beside the rocks below an Iron Age fort where there were excellent views back towards Ulverston and to the Lake District hills. Coming past Urswick Tarn, we were approached by a family of swans who possibly thought that walkers meant food offerings. We explored Great Urswick Church with its Anglo-Saxon Tunwini Cross remains on an inside window sill. The next part of our route took us across a succession of fields and past Standing Tarn, which looked pretty and blue in the sunshine. We then descended to Dalton with its impressive buildings dating from the time when it was the chief town for Furness - the old Police Station (now a hotel) intrigued us with its US flag. After refreshments in one of the cafes, we made our way to the station for the train home - and waited and waited only to discover that the train had developed a fault and been cancelled at Barrow. However, all turned out well eventually when the next train (which was not scheduled to stop at Dalton) pulled up and we all piled on for our return journey to Lancaster, just as the late afternoon was starting to get decidedly cool.
