New Holly to Garstang 1st August 2008

On Friday 1st August, our group of walkers set off from the New Holly, having travelled there by bus. The initial part of our route took us along lanes to Shireshead Church which we discovered was now a recording studio. We then descended to walk through the woodland, invaded by Himalayan Balsam, and reach Scorton picnic site for a drinks break. The party continued on to Scorton where the flowers outside the cottages were lovely. The new toilets also caused much interest, costing 20p for women but free for men (unfair!), and also not supplying any water to wash hands if we economised by not inserting coins every time but held doors open for each other! Our route then took us to Grizedale where we crossed the footbridge and climbed steeply up the woodland path. The day was warm but showery and coats were taken on and off at intervals, particularly on the higher pastures with less shelter. We eventually reached Barnacre Church, with its interesting stained glass, and useful seats in the churchyard for a picnic break. The walk ended along the disused railway to Garstang - where special arrangements had been made for refreshments at a cafe serving excellent vanilla slices! - before catching the bus back home.
