Ingleton to Devil's Bridge 12th Sept 2008

On Friday 12th September, our group of walkers set off from Lancaster by bus, which took a circuitous route to Ingleton. After crossing over the rivers in Ingleton. we walked up the fields up to Thornton Hall and then on paths above the valley, passing a succession of farms - with plenty of rather high slippery stiles. It was a slightly damp day with mist and plenty of wet grass, which made it surprising that at lunchtime, we were watching a tractor turning over the hay even in these damp conditions. After passing above Masongill Hall with its connections with Mary Doyle (the mother of the creator of Sherlock Holmes), we followed an old bridleway just below the moorland to pass Over Hall and wander down into Ireby village. Our route then took us up a steep bank where we sat for a break with a view down to the stream. Leck was the next village on our way, followed by a riverside walk to Cowan Bridge, where the water was really gushing fast from under the bridge. We then crossed field paths to Whoop Hall and then made our way down the fields to Devil's Bridge, where we had a snack before catching the bus back from Kirkby Lonsdale.
