Groups - Photography to Words

Back to List

Photography

This group meets on the second Wednesdays each month at 2.00 p.m. at LFMH or an outside location. It is intended to interest anyone who uses a camera, film or digital, and wants to improve their efforts The group largely relies on the sharing of members’ experience and knowledge. Many of the members have recently got digital cameras and photographs can be displayed using our lap-top and digital projector. A scanner is available so prints and negatives can also be displayed. Transparencies can be displayed with our slide projector or scanned into the computer.

Play-Reading

There are two groups. One group meets on the first Friday afternoon of the month, and the other on the afternoon after the monthly meeting. The scripts are often borrowed from the library We have read ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ (Oscar Wilde) and ‘Season’s greetings’ (Alan Ayckbourne) and several others.  To become familiar with scripts we read a scene or act, discuss characters, development of plot, staging, author, etc. Then we read the scenes again, hopefully with more understanding and appreciation, concentrating more on character and less on just words.

Poetry  Reading

This relatively new group when members will read and discuss their favourite poems. The detailed format is still developing and about 6 sessions are envisaged. It meets on the second Friday of the month in the afternoon.

Science & Technology

This group meets twice a month and covers a very wide range of topics.  Examples of subjects discussed in the past include:- the Development of Television from the 1920’s to today and into the future;  Digital Cameras; - choosing and using; What is Matter Made Of? - ideas from Classical Greece to the present day; Rainbows and Halos; ‘Why Quanta?’;  the recent space mission to Saturn & Titan,  an introduction to biology and DNA and we are currently discussing Energy and our potential long term shortage thereof.  Our plans include both individual talks and groups of talks forming mini-courses on specific topics and their history.  The group aims at non scientists interested in getting a feel for the physical, biological and engineering sciences or understanding the history and workings of everyday technology.

Singing

This group has recently been started and is led by a couple of professional musicians.

Part singing is being introduced leading we hope to the group becoming a 3/4 part choir

Scrabble

This group meets during the Autumn, Winter and early Spring. Recently the location has been LFMH but ideally we would like to alternate between LFMH and a location in Morecambe. Members bring Scrabble sets and we have enough to set up a number of tables, so if you would like to join us you would be welcome. We play for enjoyment and company. (Dictionaries may be used!) Beginners are especially welcome.

Sunday Pub Lunches

Each month we choose a different Pub in the area to sample the food and atmosphere. This activity is open to all members of U3A who wish to enjoy a convivial meal. Where possible lifts are arranged. People wishing to come must ring the coordinator in advance as pubs often need to know numbers.

Theatre-goers

This group arranges visits to the theatre several times a year to Manchester or elsewhere usually by coach.

Walking

The level of difficulty for different groups varies enormously. The individual groups listed below are in increasing order of  typical difficulty although considerable variations occur within each group. Each walk has a leader from within the individual group. Arrangements are in place for walkers to meet at convenient points for lifts and car sharing to the start of walks.   There is a standard scale for contributions to petrol costs.  The monthly circulation gives details on individual events.

Amblers is is for the less hardy walker and normally meets on the fourth Monday of every month for an easy walk of about two to three miles following a lunch at an eatery.

Lakes Lovers involves full days out in the Lakes taking low level strolls., normally on the first Wednesday in each month. Lunch is either a picnic or, more usually, at an eatery. We use either shared cars or public transport and an alternative activity indoors (house, exhibition etc.) is planned for poor weather. This will be decided on the day at the assembly point.  Activities have included cruises on Windermere,  strolls at Grasmere and Keswick, a visit to Holehird Gardens in Troutbeck, and walks round Elterwater and Rydal. Walks are normally less than 4 miles and without steep hills.

Summer Evening Walks are of up to 4 miles on a Thursday evening once or twice a month during the period when it is enough time to finish by dusk. They are in the Lancaster, Morecambe and Carnforth areas.

Walks are on the first and third Monday of each month and are three to six miles long and are within reasonable reach of Lancaster and Morecambe. We are starting an experiment by having two parallel walks one short and the other intermediate. Members meet each autumn to plan the following year's walks, with all those who feel able agreeing to lead at least one walk in the year. The start point is decided according to the walk, sometimes at a pub where the walkers can round off  the walk with a pub lunch.  Some walks, particularly in the spring and summer involve a packed lunch.

Tuesday and Friday Walks

We introduced these in January 2007 to give members more choice of days on which to walk.  The Friday walk uses public transport to travel to and from the walk area

Longer Walks are are of 6 - 10 miles and take place in the months having a fifth Monday. On these full day walks lunch is usually taken about mid way on the walk.

Saturday Longer Walks are a recent innovation and tend to be 6-10 miles They are currently on the third Saturday in each month. The standard is similar to that of the 5th Monday longer walks. Lunch is either a picnic or at an eatery.

Fell Walks are every fourth Monday of the month. These are not necessarily all that long but steep and rough ground are usually encountered. We often assemble at Carnforth to organise car sharing as many walks take place in the Lake District. The walks typically involve a climb of at least a 1000ft and typically 3 to 4 hours of actual walking at a modest pace. Some are much harder than others. A packed lunch is taken.

Saturday Fell Walks are similar in standard and of a similar format to the Monday Fell walks and are normally on the second Saturday each month.

Walking from Maps is a group that meets for a few sessions periodically according to demand and is designed to give confidence in using a map to find ones way about the countryside.

Wine Tasting

This is a relatively new venture which aims to offer occasional wine tasting evenings. Sessions are usually on a particular type of wine. The group is run by a small steering group. Venues will vary and include both public places and members homes.

Words

This group meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month in the morning at LFMH.   The avenues we explore include examining the meaning of words, changes in meaning, words that have been newly minted and words that have been discarded as well as borrowings from American and other foreign languages. We look at the origins of words, have a glance at grammar changes, examine the jargons inflicted upon us by politicians and their ilk or share our personal dislike or approval of recent language developments.  This group runs for a few months and is then followed by a few months of Numbers and Shapes.
