Groups - Dancing to History

Back to List

Dancing

This activity is starting in Sept 2006. Initially it will be Scottish Country Dancing but this may change with experience. It will be on the fourth Wednesday  afternoon each month.

Discussions Group

This group tackles a wide range of current topics and tries to get a balanced view of options and possibilities. Topics are chosen to be topical rather than philosophical and the discussions are more oriented to balancing pros and cons of particular solutions. It meets in the afternoon of the second Thursday of the month at the Coordinators home.

Drawing

This group is starting in September 2006 and is designed for beginners. It is expected to be at LFMH on the morning of the second and the fourth Friday in the month.

Family History

This group meets at 2.00 on the second Tuesday in each month to discuss sources of information and exchange ideas on all aspects of family history. The main aim is to help members undertake research into their own ancestry and, although there are some formal sessions, the accent is on participation and learning from each other. Meetings take place at the Friends Meeting House but, on occasions, we visit local libraries or Lancashire Records Office at Preston.

Find Your Voice

This topic is covered in short courses designed to give confidence to stand up and ask a question or make a comment in public or on how to make the most of what you have to say. They are not courses on public speaking and are open to anyone who is interested. The group is not meeting at the moment but another group of meetings is envisaged later in the year.

Gardens & Gardening

This group concentrates mainly on actual visits to specific gardens of interest. It may also include talks on topics of interest, plant exchanges, and videos of important gardens. Dates are somewhat variable but is currently the afternoon of the  third Wednesday in the month.

History        (including Local History)

This group studies any topics of historical interest either local or more general. It normally meets in the afternoon on the third Wednesday of each month at LFMH. We have borrowed video tapes/DVD’s of the Tim Curtis Memorial Lectures at the University of Central Lancashire, so that, after watching the video, members can participate in a discussion. Subjects have included “Journalism and History”, “Churchill and the Enemies Within - his Struggles with the Red Perils’’. We enjoyed talks on ‘Sir Joseph Paxton, Victorian Genius’ and ‘Illustrators for Punch ’ and a series of talks on the history of specific parts of Lancaster and Morecambe all by members.

Lakes and Dales involves full days out in the Lakes or Dales taking low level strolls., normally on the first Wednesday in each month. Lunch is either a picnic or, more usually, at an eatery. We use either shared cars or public transport and an alternative activity indoors (house, exhibition etc.) is planned for poor weather. This will be decided on the day at the assembly point.  Activities have included cruises on Windermere,  strolls at Grasmere and Keswick, a visit to Holehird Gardens in Troutbeck, and walks round Elterwater and Rydal. Walks are normally less than 4 miles and without steep hills.
