Archaeology to Creative Writing

Back to List

Archaeology

This group started in late 2005 and has had talks by members on The Orkneys, Canals, Archaeological Dating and general & local Archaeology. We have also played videos borrowed from the National Recourse Centre. Future meetings are expected to follow a similar pattern. Meetings are usually held at LFMH at 10.00 on the 3rd Friday in the month.

Architecture

The covers a wide range of architectural subjects, concerned not only with history and appearance but with the processes by which buildings are conceived and built. It has always had a particular, critical, interest in the standard of new buildings appearing in the locality. We meet at 2.00 on the  first Tuesday of the month at LFMH.

Art & Antiques

This group normally meets on the third Wednesday of the month. We meet mainly in people's homes and discuss antiques or the work of a great artist such as Picasso or Leonardo da Vinci. Occasional gallery visits are organised. Discussions are usually lively.

Bird Identification

This is an indoor short course looking at videos and discussing identification methods. It is laid on periodically mainly for interested newcomers to the field.

Bird Watching

Meetings take place on the third Thursday of the month at various locations eg RSPB at Leighton Moss. Local meetings start in the morning and some members continue after lunch. Some meetings are further afield and are full days out. The group is a mix of experienced and novice birders, so everyone is welcome. We try to help each other out with spotting and recognition. This meeting is always open.

We also have three Birding Skills groups - one beginners and two improvers - to help those less experienced to learn. These groups are limited to 12 and so booking a place is essential. At present they meet on the fourth Wednesday of the month, beginners in the morning and improvers in the afternoon.

Book Lovers

The ‘Book-lovers’ group meets regularly at the Library in Market Square.  We very much enjoy sharing the discussion with younger people and it enriches our deliberations and comments on the books. The differing approaches to what we have read are always fascinating. We have read N. Hornby ‘How to be Good’, B. Bainbridge ‘According to Queenie’, A. Sebold ‘Lovely Bones’. These are just a few examples of a good many more that the Library has provided.

Bowls

Short Mat Indoors meets at the Crag Bank Village Hall, Carnforth where it joins the local short-mat bowling group. The first Friday in each month is listed in the Diary but in fact the group at Crag Bank meets each Friday from 10.00-12.00 so members can bowl each week if they wish. The current cost is £2 per session and at present people can join regularly or on a more occasional basis.

Crown Green Bowls started in May 2006 using the Bare Village Club Green. We have to pay for a green for half a day, however few or many people come. Hence an advance commitment is needed. Details are still evolving and the cost is about £3 per person per session as well as a modest joining fee.  This is a summer only activity.

Bridge

Started in April 2006 and is meeting at the Lancaster Bridge Club in Chapel Street on the first and third Thursday afternoons in the month. Beginners and others all welcome

Cards and Crafts

This group, formed late in 2005, meets on the second Tuesday of the month at LFMH. Each session concentrates on a particular technique and involves making such things as Christmas decorations from florists ribbon and iris folding cards. The monthly newsletter gives details of any materials to be brought along to each session.

Computing

Computing meets at LFMH in the morning of  the second Wednesday in each month. Many members have their own PC's but meetings are designed to be useful to all, whether or not they have their own PC.  We have recently had groups of meetings on Image Processing and the History of Computing and have plans for other linked meetings on specific areas.  Demonstration of a particular point or technique or the relevance of a particular piece of hardware are central. Advice is always available for those who want to get their own computer.  It is not intended as a group to provide a full course on learning how to use a PC. We have laptop computers with a high resolution scanner and colour printer to give practical demonstrations at LFMH. This equipment links to a multi-media projector to enable everyone to get a clear view of the work in progress.

Beginners Computing has recently been started.  This group meets on the second Monday of the month

Creative Writing

A group formed late in 2005 which involves members writing short stories and the group discussing them. It meets in the morning of the first Thursday in the month at LFMH.
