CD RECITAL: 22 July

Perhaps rather rashly in hindsight, I volunteered to choose the programme for the July CD Recital – especially as my musical taste has long been a cause for some amusement amongst my friends. So, after some internal debate, I eventually decided just to put together some music which I like.

I started with a song by The Doors (The Unknown Soldier) – firstly the original rock version and then the lovely piece which Nigel Kennedy has made of it. Brigg Fair by Delius followed, and then the Prelude to the Antarctic Symphony by Vaughan Williams. The first half finished with the wonderful 40 part motet by Thomas Tallis, Spem in Alium.

So far, so good. But I wondered what the reaction would be to John Adams' Fearful Symmetries which started the second half. It's one of my favourites so I was pleased, as well as relieved, that nobody fled screaming from the room, and someone even borrowed the CD afterwards! The recital finished with On the Beautiful Blue Danube by Johann Strauss.

It all went so much better than I had thought. Many people apparently enjoyed my choice of music, and those who didn't were obviously too polite to say anything!

The CD Recital group meet in the Friends' Meeting House in the afternoon of every Monthly Meeting. It's a lovely, relaxing way to spend a couple of hours, and there's plenty of room for new group members. So, why don't you come and join us – you'll be very welcome!
