Nearly 90 Lancaster and Morecambe U3A
members travelled by two coaches to the Bowes Museum in Barnard
Castle, County Durham on 21st June.
The museum, opened in 1892
by founders and great collectors, John and Josephine Bowes, contains
over 15,000 exhibits of European paintings, furniture, clocks,
porcelain, pottery and textiles. Consequently, there was something
of interest for everyone - including the famous Silver Swan musical
automaton, which gave its brief but impressive display.
Sadly, the heavy rain, which started
soon after our arrival at the Bowes, made some people think twice
about a walk around the museum's grounds or into nearby Barnard
Castle. However, the enormous collection of treasures in the museum,
itself, kept most people busy, interested - and dry - throughout
the whole of their visit.
Many thanks to June De Cann and
Christine Leeming for
organising this memorable day.
