Friday - Caton to Hornby

February's public transport walk took place on a rather damp day. We set off in the slight drizzle from Caton and made our way across to the aqueduct bridge, noticing by looking at the fences how high the river water had recently been. Our route then went through woodland where bluebell and fern plants were starting to show above ground. Back on the fields near the river, we had to negotiate a route between water channels and the very muddy field. On reaching the road and observing the deep mud in the next field, a decision was made to climb up to Aughton where we found a convenient seat surrounded by snowdrops to have our lunch. We continued along lanes with views over the Lune Valley and across to the windmills on Caton Moor before reaching Eskrigge, where our numbers were temporarily increased by a following of sheep. Descending into Gressingham, we had a short stop to have a look in the church with its mosiac, snowdrops and Norman doorway. Our route then took us down the road where we saw further evidence of water damage with fences down and tree trunks at the roadside. We crossed Loyn Bridge and continued into Hornby with a good view of the castle before catching the bus home.
