Friday - Milnthorpe to Arnside

Our December walk took place on a day with beautiful weather - frosty fields, blue skies, sunshine! A real change from recent wet walking conditions! After our bus ride to Milnthorpe, we set off across the river Bela and through Dallam deer park. The deer were grouped together on the hillside - were they feeling the cold and huddling together for warmth? Our route took us towards the sunshine and to a welcome elevenses break for sherry and Christmas cake. After passing close to Beetham, we continued up through woods, passing a derelict house and on to our lunch stop at the cliff top above Fairy Steps. On our descent we encountered some very slippery limestone pavement - to be negotiated with care - and also a very muddy area where we balanced on stones and used the fence for support. We continued on past the pele tower at Hazelslack and across the rather wet area of Arnside Moss to take a high route into Arnside. After refreshments in the bakery, we made our way to the station admiring the beautiful sunset light on the estuary and viaduct.
