Friday - Arnside to Silverdale |
|
|
On a fine winter's day, our group of public transport walkers set off along the old railway from Arnside station. We crossed Arnside Moss with its tall reeds and then encountered a slight problem beside Black Dyke where a bridge was missing! However, with a bit of ingenuity and a piece of wood, we managed to negotiate the obstacle and reach the woodland walk to Arnside Tower. After a climb through limestone scrubland, we reached our lunch stop near the Pepper Pot and were rewarded with views over Silverdale and even as far as Blackpool Tower. Our route then took us past Waterslack and Challan Hall where we encountered ponies in the field. We continued through part of Gait Barrows nature reserve and along the boardwalk past Haweswater, where we found a convenient seat for a picnic. The last part of our walk took us up past the Trowbarrow limeworks and the quarry to reach Leighton Moss Visitor Centre and refreshments, before returning by train from Silverdale station - the loveliest spot on Morecambe Bay according to the sign!
